Jón came west in 1893 and settled in Winnipeg. He moved to land in the Framnes Settlement in 1901. He lived there until 1912, then moved home to Iceland in 1913 but did not find satisfaction and came back to Canada year later. He lived in Winnipeg until 1924. He then moved to Winnipegosis and then west to Steveston, British Columbia in 1942.
