Kári’s parents, Björn Benediktsson and Sigríður Jónsdóttir, emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883. They first lived in Winnipeg then moved to Glenboro in the Argyle Settlement. From there they moved to Big Point in 1899. Kári grew up on the west side of Lake Manitoba where settlers exploited the fish in the lake and engaged in agriculture. He moved to Winnipegosis in 1928 where he worked as a fisherman and in raising livestock.
