Einar came west in 1883 to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his widowed mother Ágústa Magnúsdóttir and his brother Magnús. Einar moved south the same year to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota where he took land. Katrín came west in 1887. Einar and Katrín moved in 1906 to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land north of Wynyard. Einar gave land for a school which was named Grandyschool.
