Jóhanna came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with her father, Jón Atli Magnússon. Traveling with them was Guðbjörg Hjaltadóttir who Jón Atli married in Winnipeg that same year. They settled near Mountain, N. Dakota but moved north from there in 1891 to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan and lived there three years. They moved east to Lake Manitoba and settled in Marshland in 1902. Jóhanna was 14 years old at the time and some years later she moved to Winnipeg and there married her husband. In 1931 they lived in the small village of Bagot, 130 km (81 miles) west of Winnipeg.
