Marís came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with his mother, Sigríður Friðriksdóttir. They were first in the village of Þingvalla in Saskatchewan but moved from there to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. They moved from there to Big Point in 1902. Two years later Marís took land and began farming. He lived in the community the rest of his life and his mother lived with him until her dying days.
