Marvin was the son of Guðjón Þorsteinsson and Margrét Jónsdóttir, early Icelandic settlers in Swede Prairie Township in Yellow Medicine County in Minnesota. There he grew up and then served in France in World War I in the US Army. When he returned, he began farming with his brother Jón. They retired from farming in 1952 and moved to Minneota.
