Þórarinn came to the West in 1876 with his father, Guðmundur Guðmundsson, and siblings. He had lost his mother a few years before. Guðmundur moved with his children to New Iceland but died there shortly after. There Þórarinn was taken in as a foster by the couple, Sveinbjörn Jóhannesson, and his wife, Þorbjörg Eiríksdóttir. They had come west on the same ship and likewise moved to New Iceland. Sveinbjörn moved from New Iceland in 1880 and settled near Mountain, N. Dakota. Þórarinn grew up there and in 1889 Hafsteinn Skúlason died and Þórarinn took care of the widow, Sigríður Þorbergsdóttir. Her foster daughter was Hallfríður Magnúsdóttir. The newlyweds moved west to Calgary and Sigríður went with them. They settled east of the Medicine River, a short distance from Stephan G. Stephansson. Þórarinn became a farmer and lived there until 1905, sold his house and land, and moved to the town of Red Deer where he lived after that.
