Margrét was the daughter of Jón Sigurðsson and Pálína Þórðardóttir who came west in 1888, and used the last name Sigurðson until marriage. They settled in Narrows, north of Lake Manitoba, where Margrét grew up. Þorsteinn was the son of Jón Þorsteinsson from Mýrasýsla and his wife, Solveig Bjarnadóttir from Gufuskálar. Margrét attended a teacher’s school in Winnipeg and became a teacher there in the city. There she met Þorsteinn, who later became the director of the T. Eaton retail company’s freight department. They always lived there.
