Jónas Ari Sigurðsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla on May 6, 1865. He died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on May 10, 1933.

Jónas came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 and moved the same year to Hamilton, N. Dakota. He moved east from there to the village of Pembina but then chose to study theology at the newly established seminary in Chicago and graduated from there in 1893. He was ordained a pastor the same year and served Icelandic congregations in N. Dakota until 1901. He then moved west to Seattle, Washington where he served an Icelandic congregation before received a call from the Konkordía congregation in Saskatchewan in 1918. He served there until 1927, when he became pastor of the Icelandic congregation in Selkirk, Manitoba, where he lived until his death.
