Kolbeinn was the son of Pétur Guðmundsson and Guðrún Jónasdóttir and was a year old when he moved with them to Svínadal in Húnavatnssýsla. There he was taken in as a foster by Jóhannes Sæmundsson and Línbjörg Ólafsdóttir and came west with them to Winnipeg in 1900. Gróa was the daughter of Helgi Þorsteinsson and Dagbjört Dagbjartsdóttir who came west in 1887 and settled at Point Roberts, Washington in 1894.
