Jóhann Hjörtur was the son of Jóhann Guðmundsson and Ólína Katrín Jónsdóttir who came west from Mýrasýsla in 1900. They settled in New Iceland and Jóhann grew up there. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1930, and graduated as a teacher from the Manitoba Normal School in 1931. He was a flight instructor in Canada’s air force but ended up in the office of the Department of Justice in British Columbia.
