Baldur Stefánsson was born on September 25, 1879 in Shawano, Wisconsin. He died in Alberta on June 13, 1949. He had the name Baldur Stephansson in the west.

Baldur was the son of Stefán Guðmundsson (Stephan G. Stephansson) and his wife Helga Jónsdóttir. He grew up in the Garðar Settlement in North Dakota with his parents and siblings and moved with them west to Alberta in 1890. There he started farming in 1905 and farmed until his dying days. Sigurlína was the daughter of Benedikt Jónsson and Sesselja Pálsdóttir. Sigurlína’s father and Baldur’s mother were siblings, the children of Jón Jónsson in Mýri í Bárðardal. She moved to Alberta about the same time as Baldur.
