Regína was the daughter of Jón Jónsson of S. Þingeyjarsýsla and his wife Helga Davíðsdóttir of Axarfjörður who came west in 1874. They lived in N. Dakota but moved in 1880 to Alberta. Guðmundur grew up in the Garðar Settlement and moved west to Alberta in 1889 with his parents, Stefán Guðmundsson (Stephan G Stephanson) and Helga Jónsdóttir. They lived near Markerville and Guðmundur ran a store there with Jón Benediktsson 1909-1926. He sold his share, moved to Innisfail where he worked in transportation but at the same time ran a meat market. In 1933 they settled in Red Deer and Guðmundur worked there mainly on construction.
