Málfríður’s parents were Finnbogi Þorgilsson and Málfríður Jónsdóttir, pioneer settlers in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in Manitoba in 1886. Benjamín was the son of Benjamín Benjamínsson and Kristína Jósefsdóttir who came west in 1920. Benjamín and Málfríður were farmers in Otto in the Settlement, but then moved to Winnipeg in 1955.
