Guðrún was the daughter of Þorsteinn Þorláksson and his wife Hlaðgerður Grímsdóttir Laxdal, early settlers in the Þingvalla settlement in N. Dakota in 1879. Þorsteinn later worked as a shopkeeper in Milton, N. Dakota. Guðrún went to a teacher college and taught before she married. She and her husband moved to Detroit where she was a controller at a zoo for about 20 years. Her husband worked at Progressive Industries in the city.
