Oddur came to the West in 1893 with his parents, Guttormur Þorsteinsson and Birgitta Jósefsdóttir and siblings. They settled in Manitoba where Oddur became a farmer in Húsavík on Lake Winnipeg. He also fished on the lake. Guðný was the daughter of Hermann Guðmundsson and Guðrún Snjólaug Jónsdóttir who lived at Winnipeg Beach.
