Bjarni Archibald Jóhannsson was born in Winnipeg on February 6, 1905. He had the name Bjarni A Bjarnason in the west. He later changed his last name and signed as Bjarni A Barnell.

Bjarni grew up in New Iceland, attended middle school in Arborg, and attended the Jón Bjarnarson school in Winnipeg. He studied at a trade school in Winnipeg in 1928-1929 and worked as an accountant in the city. He headed west to the Pacific Ocean in the fall of 1931 and began studying theology at the Pacific Theological Seminary in Seattle. Then continued his studies at North-Western Theological Seminary in Minneapolis in 1932-1935. He was ordained as a pastor in Selkirk, Manitoba on June 24, 1934. He worked first in missions but later became a pastor in Gimli. Alma Aðalheiður was the daughter of Páll Kristinn Gotskálksson and Margrét Jónsdóttir from Ísafjarðarsýsla. Bjarni and Alma moved to Verdon, Nebraska.
