Valgerður Helen Briem was born on January 19, 1888 in the Fljóts Settlement in New Iceland. She died on July 4, 1968 in Riverton. She was known as Valla H Briem in the west.

Valgerður was the daughter of Jóhann Briem and Guðrún Pálsdóttir, early settlers at Grund in the Fljóts Settlement. Óli Kristinn was the son of John Coghill, a Scottish merchant in Reykjavík, and Sigríður Ólafsdóttir in S. Múlasyla. He came west in 1910 and worked in accounting for Svein Thorvaldson in the Fljóts Settlement. He later was a merchant in Riverton and ran the Coghill Meat Market there.
