Jens came to the West in 1904 with his parents, Elías Elíasson and Guðrún Hávarðardóttir, and siblings. They settled in Marshland, Manitoba. Helga was the daughter of Friðrik Guðmundsson and Þorgerður Jónsdóttir who came west with their children in 1905 and settled in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Jens was in Selkirk 1915-1917, then joined the Canadian army and was sent to England. He returned in 1919 and entered a trade school in Winnipeg in the fall. He worked in Winnipeg 1921-1926, then moved west to the Pacific and settled in the Icelandic settlement of Osland. From there, the family moved to Mozart in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan, where Jens was postmaster from 1928 to 1948. They then moved to Winnipeg and lived there ever after.
