Halldór Sigurgeirsson settled in Winnipeg in 1887 and after working at almost anything for the first few years he opened a store in 1898. He had a huge house built on the corner of Sherbrooke St. and Elgin Ave., moved his family upstairs and ran the store on the ground floor. In one corner of the store, Halldór housed a collection of Icelandic books and magazines and received titles sent from Iceland. He sold a lot of Icelandic books.
