Ólafur was three years old when he came with his parents, Siggeir Ólafsson and Halldóra Guðmundsdóttir, to Winnipeg, Manitoba. After speculating for a few years about a future location, the family settled in Duluth, Minnesota. No doubt his mother’s work had some influence on the boy during his upbringing, as Halldóra was a working midwife in the city. Ólafur graduated from the University of Minnesota and earned a medical degree from the University of Chicago. He first worked in Duluth, but in 1930 he is a registered physician in the city of Gary, Indiana. His specialty was stomach ailments.
