Skúli Benjamínsson

Vesturfarar

Guernsey is a district west of Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan

Skúli Benjamínsson grew up in New Iceland with his parents, and that has no doubt determined that farming in some form was on his mind from an early age. He moved west to the prairie and took land in Saskatchewan near Guernsey in 1905. This area was then being developed, with settlers from all over coming west. Skuli realized after three years of hard work that traditional-style farming on the Canadian prairies was not for him. He returned to Manitoba and settled in Winnipeg. There he got a job at the Hudson Bay Company and studied business at night school. He quit his job and started building houses.

Benjaminson Construction Co. Ltd

Skúli aimed high and carved his own path. He took advantage of opportunities that flourished in the following years. Numerous buildings built by Skúli are still standing in many places in Winnipeg and in neighboring settlements. Along with the construction industry, Skúli founded another company, Silver Heights Fur Farm Ltd. which engaged in fur farming.
