Sturla Jóhannsson grew up in Duluth, Minnesota and went to elementary and high school there. He decided to pursue education and studied at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul from 1901 and from there completed his B.A. degree in 1905. From there his path led to California where he began studying astronomy at the University of California in Berkeley and completed his doctorate in 1913. He was hired as a teacher’s assistant at the school in 1910, an assistant professor in the years 1918-1928 and a professor of astronomy from 1928 to of 1950, and finally Professor Emeritus from 1950. He wrote a number of articles published in astronomical journals and published Orbits of Comets and minor planets 1907-1930.
