Þórarinn B Magnússon

Vesturfarar

Childhood home in N. Dakota. Painting by Þórarinn.

Þórarinn Björn Magnússon or Thorarin Bjorn Snowfield was born in the Icelandic countryside in N. Dakota where most of his peers were inclined to farming, choosing to follow in the footsteps of their fathers. Thorarin chose a different path, right from his childhood he showed great interest in art; he became an artist. He went to school in Mountain and, so that he could further his education, the family moved temporarily to Minneapolis. From there, he made his way to New York where he attended the Art Students League art school. He returned to Minneapolis and enrolled in the School of Art, now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Although he studied in leading art schools, he was considered a rather conservative artist, reluctant to follow unknown paths. His works show that well, but his art is a tribute to a bygone era on the plains of N. Dakota.
