Einar Hjörleifsson was Lögberg’s first editor and held that position until February 28, 1895. This was written about his editorship: “Einar immediately left his mark on the paper, and to some extent it has kept him ever since. As has already been written, Einar was very concerned about the future of Icelanders and Icelandic culture here on the continent, and there is no need to elaborate on that. He wrote about most things. In Lögberg’s first year, he wrote editorials on the following subjects: six on the social issues of Icelanders, six on the immigration of Icelanders, two on the education of Icelandic children in primary schools in Iceland, eleven on the attitude of Icelanders towards Canadians, twenty-one on their attitude towards Iceland, fifteen on the economy and politics in Iceland, twelve on Icelandic literature, and fourteen on politics in Canada.” (SÍV5 page 24) Dr. Richard Beck wrote about Einar and said: “It was an invaluable asset for Lögberg, and western Icelandic journalism as a whole, that Einar became the editor of the paper and occupied that position for years; for it became in his hands, as could be expected from a man of such clever writing, the most splendid in style of writing and at the same time elaborate and varied in content. It was no less a great benefit to the Western Icelandic culture and ethnic issues that Einar stayed on and wrote for years in Winnipeg”.
