Jón Vopni had learned carpentry from his father in Vopnafjörður and worked at it for the first few years when he came to Winnipeg. Later, in 1904, he turned to real estate sales and owned the real estate agency Oddsson, Hansson & Vopni. He left it after a few years and turned to printmaking and founded a printing workshop with his sons, which he ran for quite a few years.
