Arinbjörn Sigurgeirsson was one of the young Icelanders who moved to Winnipeg and chose to earn a living in the city. In 1886, Winnipeg was booming, the city was a center for transportation from east to west, and south to the United States. Arinbjörn soon got a job in transport, but from the 1890s his mind looked elsewhere and he thought of funeral services. He started his own business in 1894 and by 1907 he had built an elaborate funeral parlor and ran it for the rest of his life.
