Gunnlaugur Jóhannsson settled in Winnipeg and lived there almost all the time except for one year spent in Seattle. He was interested in business and started with a sweets shop, but then went into the grocery business. He ran a grocery almost until the day of his death. It was popular, bright, with a good selection of products and the merchant himself was popular and skilled.
