Þorsteinn Sigurðsson fæddist í A. Skaftafellssýslu 28. janúar, 1888. Mýrmann vestra. Ókvæntur og barnlaus. Hann flutti vestur til Manitoba árið 1903 með móður sinni, ekkjunni Þuríði Þorsteinsdóttur og bróður sínum, Jóni og systurinni, Jórunni. Þau settust að í Winnipeg þar sem Þorsteinn fór fljótlega að kanna atvinnumöguleika. Hann stundaði fiskveiðar í Manitobavatni. Hann var skráður í kanadíska herinn árið 1918 …
