Province of Ontario: Ontario makes up much of central Canada, between Manitoba and Québec, including the vast, cold, rocky, and forested region of northern Ontario, which is underlain by granites and similar rocks. However, the southern Ontario region that projects south between Lake Michigan to the west, and Lakes Erie and Ontario to the east, is not as cold, and favorable for agriculture due to more southerly location and the presence of limestones and Ice Age sediments. Icelandic settlement in Ontario occurred in the area that is transitional from the rocky lands of northern Ontario, and the farmland of southern Ontario, around the town of Kinmount, as well as Parry Sound, Rosseau, Muskoka, as well as Cardwell farther south.
