In 1911, Western Icelanders were invited by cousins and friends in Iceland to join a general fundraiser. The purpose was to honor Jón Sigurðsson’s one hundredth birthday. The contribution from the west was so great that it was decided make a replica of the statue that Einar Jónsson had created, and send it west across the ocean to Manitoba.
