Erlendur Guðmundsson

Vesturfarar

Richard Beck was the editor of Ólaf Þorgeirsson’s Almanak in Winnipeg in 1950 and wrote about the late Erlend: “An unusually great man of knowledge, much of which has appeared in Western Icelandic newspapers, the rest in manuscript .” Steinunn Brynhildur, Erlend’s daughter, preserved the manuscript, Erlend’s letters and more over the years, but Erlend’s grandchildren kept his memory alive, bringing his entire collection to Iceland where it is preserved. In 2002, a book, “Heima & Heiman” was published in Reykjavík and Kristján B. Jónasson and Þorvaldur Kristinsson took care of the publication, Mál & Menning published it. The publication is based on the writings of Erlend Guðmundsson, a sort of biography of him. There you can find exceedingly good descriptions of human life and business practices in Gimli by Lake Winnipeg.
