Ingibjörg’s parents were Jón Konráðsson from Kárdalstunga in Húnavatnssýsla and Guðfinna Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir who came west in 1823. They took the name Kárdal in the west. Magnús was the son of Einar Guðmundsson and Margrét Sigurðardóttir, early settlers in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland. He grew up in New Iceland and lived in the Árnes settlement. He was a fisherman and a farmer. The couple was very involved in community affairs, Magnús was on the local school board for over twenty years and Jónína treasurer of the Lutheran congregation for many years and president of the women’s association in the community.
