Leo’s parents were Jóhannes Melsted and Jóhanna Jóhannesdóttir in Garðar, N. D. There, Leo grew upp but only eight years old he moved with his father to Wynyard, Saskatchewan. Leo fitted in with other immigrants and became active in the young community. He was on the board of the town´s council and served as Mayor for a while.
