Helga Jónasdóttir was born on November 1, 1906 in Winnipeg. She died on January 21, 1949.

Helga was the daughter of music teacher Jónas Pálsson and Emily Helga Baldvinsdóttir. Helga studied music and won prizes for her talent, e.g. gold medal and scholarship in Toronto in 1922.  She was a music teacher. Skarhéðinn was the son of Gunnar Friðriksson and Guðrún Helga Jörundsdóttir in Winnipegosis, Manitoba. He was taken in as a foster child by Björg Tighe, his mother’s sister and her husband. His foster-father, Stearne Tighe, worked on the railroad in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and that no doubt caused Skarphéðinn to join the Canada Northern Railway Company. He was wounded in World War II and died in England.
