Aðalsteinn was taken in as a foster child by his maternal uncle, Ólafur Egilsson and Guðrún Gísladóttir, and came west with them to Manitoba in 1893. They first settled in the Argyle settlement and lived there for two years. From there they moved to Big Point and took up land at Lonely Lake, where they lived until their deaths.
