Agnar was the son of Ágúst Magnússon of Húnavatnssýsla and Ragnheiður Jóhannsdóttir Straumfjörð from Mikley, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1923 and became headmaster at Riverton from 1925-28 and at the Jón Bjarnason School from 1929-1940. He last taught at a middle school in Winnipeg. Guðlaug was the daughter of Þorgrímur Ólafsson from Borgarnes and Guðrún Rósa Þorsteinsdóttir, who lived in Manitoba.
