Gladstone Albert Hannesson was born in Gimli on December 17, 1923. He died in Winnipeg in 1998. He had the name Albert Kristjanson in the west.

Albert (he never used Gladstone) was the son of Hannes Kristjánsson and Elín Þórdís Magnúsdóttir in Gimli. Albert grew up and went to elementary and high school there. He studied agronomy at the Ontario Agricultural College in Gelph and received his B. Sc. degree in 1950. His studies continued, next at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo where he completed his M. SC. degree in agricultural economics in 1953. He then completed his studies in 1967 in Madison, Wisconsin, where he earned a doctorate in sociology at the University of Wisconsin. More about Albert below, see Employment.
