Albert was the son of Lárus Guðmundsson and Ingibjörg Guðmundsdóttir, who came west in 1887. They lived in Minnesota for a while, but in 1908 they moved to Winnipeg. Albert went to school there, studied at the Success Business College, and worked in retail. He also fished in Lake Winnipeg and painted houses. In 1930, he moved to Iceland, where he was the owner of an electronics store in Reykjavík in the years 1933-1939. In 1940, he became an employee of the American Embassy in Iceland.
