Aldís Inga Clara Þorsteinsdóttir was born in Mountain, N. Dakota on December 18, 1887. She had the name Aldis Inga Clara Thorlakson and later Michaels in the west.

Aldís was the daughter of Þorsteinn Þorláksson and Hlaðgerðar Grímsdóttir Laxdal, early settlers in the Þingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota in 1879. She finished middle school and music studies in Winnipeg in 1906. She taught piano in that city and at the same time was organist in Tjaldbúðarkirkja with Reverend Friðrik Bergmann, her uncle. William attended trade school and studied accounting. He became a branch manager at First National Bank in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
