Anna’s parents, Hjörtur Guðmundsson and Guðrún Guðmundsdóttir, came to the west with their children in 1899. They settled in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland at the turn of the century, where Anna grew up. Anna studied music in Winnipeg and sang in Icelandic choirs in her home village in New Iceland and also in Winnipeg. There she sang solo for a while in the First Lutheran Church.
