Árni Gíslason was born at Eskifjörður in S. Múlasýsla on July 26, 1888. He had the last name Johnson in the west.
Unmarried and childless.
Árni was the son of Gísli Jónsson and Sólrún Árnadóttir who came west with their four children in 1903. He followed his parents to Gladstone, Manitoba, from where they made their way to Siglunes, where they lived until 1907. They then settled in Wapah on Lake Manitoba in 1910. From there, Árni left the same year and purchased land at Asham Point on the west shore of the lake. He initially farmed but soon focused on fishing both in Lake Manitoba and in smaller lakes and rivers in the northern part of the province. He last lived on Matheson Island.
