Kristín was the daughter of Hjálmar Jóhannesson and Guðbjörg Sturlaugsdóttir, who newly married came west in 1886 and first settled in Mountain. Kristín was born there and when she was a few years old she moved with them to Hallson, N. Dakota and in 1901 to the Geysir settlement in New Iceland. Kristín was involved in social issues in New Iceland, was in a women’s club in the Geysir settlement and later in another in Riverton. She also took part in church affairs in both places.
