Bent Gestur Sivertz was born in Victoria, Vancouver Island on August 11, 1905.

Bent was the son of Kristján Sigurgeirsson and Elinborg S Samúelsdóttir in Victoria. He followed the educational path and completed a BA degree from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in 1940. Then he took up sailing on the world’s oceans and after that he received all the rights of a ships captain. He finished college, got a teaching license and was on the Vancouver school board for a while. In 1929 he joined the Canadian Navy and taught and trained future officers and was made Principal of the Officers´ Training School in Halifax, NS. 1944-1946. He worked for Canada in San Francisco 1950-1957.
