Björn was the son of Stefán Björnsson and Guðríður Björnsdóttir and he moved west with them in 1889. They settled in Manitoba and took land right next to Lundar. Björn attended elementary school there, then went to Winnipeg and enrolled at Wesley College. He graduated in law from the University of Manitoba in 1915.
