Christian was the son of Kristján Sigurgeirsson and Elinborg S Samúelsdóttir in Victoria, Vancouver Island. He had become a teacher before going to France in 1916 where he was in World War I. He returned in 1919 and taught high school studies. He became a professor of chemistry at Western Ontario University in London, Ontario in 1926. During World War II, he worked with a group of experts commissioned by the Canadian Surgical Committee.
