Dagbjartur was the son of Guðbjartur Jónsson and Sigríður Össurardóttir and came west with them in 1911. He first lived in Winnipeg where he got a job with the city’s bus company. Later he went to live with his cousin Nikulás Ottenson in Park River, Manitoba. From there he went to Akra, N. Dakota, where he worked in house construction. He went to Iceland in 1915 and stayed there for a year. His and Lovísa’s paths probably crossed that year and she got engaged to him. She came west in 1921 and married him soon after arriving.
