Daníel Hjörtur Guðnason was born in Dalasýsla on October 31, 1865. He died in the Lundar settlement on October 13, 1946. He took the last name Backman in the west.
Spouse: December 22, 1888 Hólmfríður Salóme Kristjánsdóttir b. February 17, 1868, d. February 17, 1950.
Children: 1. Kristján Jens b. 1889 2. Guðni b. November 7, 1891 3. Þórður b. 1904, d. June 4, 1924.
They came west to Winnipeg on the same ship in 1887. He took land in the Swan Lake (Álftavatn) settlement near Burnt Lake where they lived for two years. The flooding of the lake forced them to move and soon they moved to Winnipeg. They then took land south of Lundar and moved from Winnipeg to the community in 1900. They lived there after that.
