Dómhildur came west with her children to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1909 and became a housekeeper for her brother, Gunnar, in the Vallar settlement in Saskatchewan. She moved with him in 1913 to Wynyard and to land that Gunnar later bought in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð).
