George Johnson was born in Winnipeg on November 18, 1920. He died in Gimli in New Iceland on July 8, 1995. He was known as Dr. George Johnson in the west.

Dr. George was the son of Jónas George Jónsson and Laufey Benediktsdóttir in Winnipeg. There he attended elementary school and graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg in 1950. He was a physician in Gimli from 1950 to 1958, then turned to politics and was elected to the Manitoba Legislative Assembly in Gimli in the 1958 election. He was Manitoba’s Minister of Health and Minister of Education from 1963. Doris was the daughter of Dr. August Theodore Blöndal and Guðrún Stefánsdóttir in Winnipeg.
